Surname is a site-based, walking narrative experience set in San Francisco's Chinatown. This project reimagines the neighborhood as both a living archive and a narrative landscape, spanning the pivotal decades from the 1860s to the 1930s, from the Transcontinental Railroad to wartime fundraising.
To bridge documented history and collective memory, this project draws on selected moments from a self-authored historical fiction, anchoring them within the physical geography of the streets. Participants explore real alleys and landmarks through a combination of a printed exploration kit, puzzle-solving, and augmented reality, moving between material artifacts and on-site storytelling.
The title, Surname, is a metaphor: three characters across different generations, bound by a shared name, offer a localized and deeply human entry point into an era of monumental change.

Fading Voices (2024)
Empathy / Virtual Reality / Immersive Interaction
Empathy / Virtual Reality / Immersive Interaction
Fading Voices is a VR experience that simulates the gradual loss of hearing, immersing users in the challenges faced by those with acquired hearing loss. Through sensory distortions and interactive storytelling, the experience creates empathy by allowing users to navigate a world where communication becomes fragmented.
Hearing is often taken for granted, yet its absence reshapes how individuals engage with others and the world around them. This project highlights the emotional and social isolation that can arise from hearing loss, urging users to reflect on accessibility, inclusion, and the unspoken struggles of those who live with this condition.

The Inez Burns Story (2024)
Storytelling / Augment Reality
This project is an AR monument that commemorates Inez Burns, a controversial abortionist in San Francisco who defied legal authorities to provide essential reproductive care to women. Users will experience an AR journey near the site of Inez’s former clinic to uncover her hidden story.
This story highlights the conflict between women’s autonomy and a legal system that strips them of that control. The monument addresses the human concept of women's reproductive rights, revealing the systemic oppression faced by those seeking care. It celebrates Inez’s bold defiance in the face of systemic injustice, presenting her as a champion for women's rights.

Participatory Installation / Sensory Experience / Engage Nature / Acoustic Instrument
Chora is a participatory sound instrument designed for the beach, created to interact with both tide and human touch. Inspired by the shoreline as a natural orchestra, it invites people to listen, respond, and join the rhythm of a changing environment.
The instrument uses small fragments inside a bamboo tube to create sound through collision and movement. Participants can replace the materials inside to shape their own tone, while a waterproofed microphone and Bluetooth speakers make the subtle sounds audible over the waves. As an early prototype, Chora explores the possibility of turning the beach into a shared performance space.

Installation / Digital Electronics / Space Memory
This interactive installation focuses on the spatial memory, capturing and reimagining the transient and the eternal within the confines of the Timken Lecture Hall at CCA. It shows a painting of light and sound, drawing on the invisible threads of human activities that have pervaded the space.
Through the frosted glass chimes and its mechanical movements, and embedded with vibrant light strips, the installation embodies the fluid narrative of space and time, reminiscence and continuity.
